Curriculum Overview

Junior Secondary School

Students spend three years in the Junior School; all programmes include Physical Education and Computer Studies.

Evaluation and Certification are based on Continuous Assessment (Form Order System) and End-of-Course Examination conducted by the Ministry of Education leading to the award of the Junior Secondary School Certificate of Education (JSSCE).

Senior Secondary School

Students also spend three years in the Senior Secondary School. The school combines the Nigerian Curriculum with the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) conducted by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Students spend three years in Senior School and they all offer programmes in Physical Education. Evaluation and Certification are based on Continuous Assessment (Form Order System) and End-of-course examination conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), leading to the award of the West African Senior School Certificate (WASSC).

IGCSE

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) programme was introduced into Atlantic Hall in September 2001 as a substitute for the Cambridge GCE 'O' Level. Started in 1998, the IGCSE is fast gaining ground, with more schools all over the world now embracing it. The IGCSE has more international recognition, and is conducted in June and November each year by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) through the British Council. All Atlantic Hall SS3 Students sit for the examination in November starting from year 2012.

The Sciences

Science education

The school has science laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science.

The school farm

There is a school farm on the campus, to assist in the teaching of Agricultural Science. Agricultural Science is a popular subject, especially in the Junior School. Students have their own ‘beds' in the School Farm.

Arts

The school provides tuition in art, music and drama. Music is taught throughout the school, and is compulsory for all junior students. Over the years, Atlantic Hall students have consistently won prizes in Art at the national level; the school choir has won several music awards.

Drama is taught as an extempore or scripted class lesson, or in a formal play. A variety of drama productions are staged by both Junior and Senior students every year. Each year the four houses present a House Play for the Founders' Day. Supervised by teachers and professional technical crew, students write and produce plays for the Inter-house Drama competition.

Vocational Education

Clothing and Textiles is offered as separate subject in the Senior School . Students are taught about fabrics, design and production of clothing, draperies, home decoration and fashion, among other skills. Home Economics is taught in the Junior Secondary School (Foods and Nutrition in the Senior School ) to introduce students to the rudiments of Home Management and Basic Cookery. Students can opt for this subject in the WASSCE and the IGCSE.

The Industrial Work Experience (I.W.E.)

The Industrial Work Experience (IWE) is a programme designed for SS 2 (penultimate year) students. The students are expected to spend a period of about two weeks at a chosen company, usually one that corresponds with their choice of future career. This serves an introduction to a practical experience of their chosen future careers, and help to shape the students' choices. It serves as a follow-up to the regular career talks which the students receive.

Sports

The students participate in a number of sports, including football, basketball and Athletics. There is a yearly Inter-House sports competition to determine the best sporting house for the year. Events include the popular 100m sprint, long jump and other track and field events. Regular competitions in other sports are also organized.

Medical Facilities

The school has a well-equipped clinic with a doctor and nurses resident in the school compound.

PTA

The School has a Parent Teacher Association open to teachers and parents.

Projects

The Atlantic Hall P.T.A. is actively involved in many school projects; it recently donated a fully equipped clinic and ambulance to the school.

Students

The school has about 500 students aged 9 to 18. It is a boarding school, where students reside in Year Wings with their House Parents. On enrollment in the school, the students are divided into four houses(which are named after precious gems), namely Emerald, Garnet, Sapphire and Topaz. The students participate in some external competitions such as the Cowbell NASSMAC(National Secondary School Mathematics Competition), and are known to have produced winners of the competition in the past.

Alumni

Some notable alumni of the school include American Football player Osi Umenyiora, hip-hop artist Naeto C and promising author Chibundu Onuzo among others.
